Your hotel occupancy rate is the share of available room nights you sold: room nights sold divided by rooms times nights. A 120-room hotel that sells 2,880 nights in a 30-night month runs at 80%.
Example: a 120-room hotel over 30 nights. Type your own figures.
Occupancy = 2,880 ÷ (120 × 30) = 80.0%
Occupancy = room nights sold ÷ (rooms × nights) × 100. Use the same room count every month: if rooms are out of order for a renovation, decide once whether they count as available.
Example: 120 rooms over 30 nights give 3,600 available room nights. Selling 2,880 of them is an occupancy rate of 80%.
Full is not the same as good. A hotel at 100% may have sold too cheaply, and the rate decides the revenue. That is why occupancy sits next to ADR and RevPAR on every report.

“In every market, in every corner of the world, you should be able to run a 80% occupancy.”

“Being at 100% could also mean that your room rate has been a bit too low.”
Once a month the Tuesday Briefing carries the latest public market figures for occupancy, ADR and RevPAR, with the source.
